Will Graham Q&A: How Can I Face My Fears of the Coronavirus?

Q. I’ll be honest. I’m afraid.

A. I hear what you are saying. I think most of us probably dismissed this in its early stages, only to come to the realization that it’s a much bigger monster than originally anticipated.

My friends, I’m going to be honest: The world has every reason to be afraid. From a worldly perspective, there is little hope and many are on a path that will lead them into eternal separation from God. I would be afraid as well if my eternity wasn’t secure in Christ Jesus.

However, for those of us who recognize that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1, NKJV), we must hand that fear over to Him and find our comfort in His presence. After all, “which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” (Matthew 6:27, ESV).

In fact, I believe that there is a direct correlation between faith and fear. The less faith you have, the more fear you have. The more faith you have, the less fear you have. If you struggle with Christ’s death and resurrection—the hope of eternity—you’re likely to be in fear over what you see taking place in this temporary world.

When your faith deepens, the fear begins to dissipate as you rely fully on “the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NKJV). That’s why I mention prayer and Bible study as two key things to do right now. As you immerse yourself in His comforting presence, I believe the fears of this world will fade in the light of His glory.
