The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, whose stated aim is to promote and protect human rights guaranteed under international law, has initiated a new campaign claiming “You have human rights since birth.”
While the slogan may look good at first glance, pro-life observers point out that the statement shows that this U.N. body believes human rights should not be recognized until after a baby is born. It is also a violation of international law on the rights of the unborn. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, the pre-eminent international treaty on children’s rights, states in its preamble that children are to be protected “before as well as after birth.”
In another indication that abortion advocates within the U.N. are working to establish abortion in international law, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) recently released a manual promoting abortion as “justice.” It recommends that sexual and reproductive health care include access to “safe abortion services” and “post-abortion care.”
