Franklin Graham, along with more than 250 other evangelical leaders, is calling on churches to set aside tomorrow, June 2, as a special day of prayer for President Donald Trump.
“President Trump’s enemies continue to try everything to destroy him, his family, and the presidency,” Franklin said in a May 26 Facebook post announcing the day of prayer. “In the history of our country, no president has been attacked as he has. I believe the only hope for him, and this nation, is God. This is a critical time for America. We’re on the edge of a precipice. Time is short. We need to pray for God to intervene. We need to ask God to protect, strengthen, encourage and guide the president.”
Franklin is asking pastors across the United States to take a moment in tomorrow’s services to pray for the president. The Bible says: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, ESV).
Among the leaders who signed the statement are Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Southern California; Bishop Harry Jackson of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland; Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist Church, Plano, Texas; David Jeremiah of Shadow Mountain Community Church in San Diego; James and Shirley Dobson of the Dobson Family Institute; Alveda King of Civil Rights for the Unborn, and Samuel Rodriguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.
This past week, Franklin elaborated on the call to prayer and emphasized that it is not a political statement. “My prayer is not an endorsement of the president,” he said in an interview with The Christian Post. “It’s to just call on God to give him wisdom because if he makes a good decision, it is good for all of us. If he makes a bad decision, it is bad for all of us. Whether we are Republican or Democrats or Independents, this is just asking God to guide him and direct him as he makes decisions every day that impact our lives.”
