The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given an R rating to a movie based on the life of former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson, despite objections of Pure Flix Entertainment, which sought to make a PG-13 film showing Johnson’s transformation to Christian pro-life advocate.
The MPAA says it rated “Unplanned” based on “some disturbing/bloody images.” A Pure Flix spokesperson says those scenes are overstated by the MPAA, which called attention to a scene where a sonogram image is in view before and just after an abortion procedure. Michael Scott, Pure Flix president, told Fox News: “In this case, R stands for recommended.”
Pure Flix’s Ken Rather told the Hollywood Reporter, “A 15-year-old girl can get an abortion without her parent’s permission but she can’t see this movie without adult supervision? That’s sad.”
