In a decision hostile to religious liberty, the Oregon Court of Appeals in December ruled against Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes By Melissa, due to their decision to stand firmly behind their Biblical beliefs that marriage is the union between one man and one woman.
The Court of Appeals upheld a $135,000 penalty by the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries that was levied against the Kleins for declining to prepare a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The Kleins were ordered to pay that amount to the couple.
“The Oregon Court of Appeals decided that Aaron and Melissa Klein are not entitled to the Constitution’s promises of religious liberty and free speech,” said Kelly Shackelford, president and CEO of First Liberty Institute, which provides legal representation for the Kleins. “We are disappointed that the court ruled against the Kleins.”
