North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Shares Personal Abortion Story

‘This issue transcends politics’

In a video posted to social media March 24, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a vocal advocate for the sanctity of human life, revealed that he and his wife, Yolanda, chose to abort their child over 33 years ago.

The video was in response to decade-old Facebook comment that recently resurfaced in which Robinson referenced paying for an abortion.

“It was the hardest decision we have ever made, and sadly, we made the wrong one,” Robinson admitted. “This decision has been with us ever since.”

The termination of that pregnancy, and the pain and regret that came with it, is the reason why the couple is “so adamantly pro-life,” Robinson said.

“For everyone who has had this experience and carries that burden, we want you to know you are not alone,” he added. “… We have a Savior who forgives us of our sins [and] offers us grace. No one is perfect, but no one is too far gone to be saved. … This issue transcends politics.”

Franklin Graham applauded the lieutenant governor and his wife for the “heartfelt video about how abortion has impacted their lives.”

“This is personal to them,” Franklin posted to Facebook. “… I appreciate their honesty and their strong pro-life stand.”

North Carolina Faith and Freedom Coalition also expressed gratitude for the Robinsons’ transparency.

“Some of North Carolina’s most effective and outspoken pro-life advocates are those who fully understand the emotional, physical and spiritual impacts of abortion because they have personally received or supported an abortion,” the organization said in a statement.

“Through prayer, healing and forgiveness, many former abortion clinic workers, OBGYN doctors, mothers and fathers have transformed their abortion regret into a mission to diligently advocate for the unborn.”

Many, like the Robinsons, desire to show women contemplating abortion that there are other options. The coalition pointed out that by volunteering with pregnancy resource centers and other North Carolina nonprofits, pro-life advocates can help disadvantaged and impoverished pregnant women receive the medical and social services they need to choose life.

“We are grateful for the unwavering commitment from Lt. Governor Robinson to protect life, including the unborn,” the coalition concluded.
