National Midwifery Conference Bars Pro-Life OB-GYN Group

An association of pro-life obstetricians and gynecologists was excluded from a national midwifery conference because of its views on abortion, according to a report by The Daily Signal.

The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) was denied any presence at the Midwifery Works Conference, organized by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

According to the report, three major OB-GYN groups, including the board that certifies OB-GYNs, have embraced pro-abortion stances, even though more than 75% of OB-GYNs do not perform abortions in their practices.

Dr. Donna Harrison, the CEO of AAPLOG, told The Daily Signal: “Physicians and midwives who care for both of their patients, both the pregnant mother and the human being in her womb, are being systematically bullied and eliminated from being able to practice medicine, at a time when maternity care deserts are worsening around the country. ACNM has recently joined in the bullying by refusing to allow midwives who care for their in-utero patients to even speak or exhibit at the recent ACNM national conference.”

In a letter to ACNM leadership, Harrison wrote that denying AAPLOG’s exhibit booth at the conference was “a clear attempt to silence the voices of many within your own organization who do not include abortion as part of their clinical practice and who desire to educate on the peer-reviewed medical literature that show the risks abortion poses to the health of women.”

The report adds that in September, the organization responsible for certifying OB-GYNs, the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ABOG), issued a statement that appears to threaten pro-life OB-GYNs with the loss of board certification if they discuss the potential harms of abortion with patients—discussions that ABOG may decide to label as misinformation because the board enthusiastically supports abortion.

The pro-life group, AAPLOG, states on its website that the association exists to “encourage and equip its members and other concerned medical practitioners to provide an evidence-based rationale for defending the lives of both the pregnant mother and her pre-born child.”
