New Jersey residents now have the option of amending their birth certificates to reflect a third, gender-neutral sex. The Babs Siperstein Law went into effect on Feb. 1, allowing citizens to identify as male, female or X. Previous law required medical proof of sex reassignment surgery or an affidavit from a mental health professional. The Babs Siperstein Law includes no such requirements.
New Jersey joins California, Oregon, Washington and New York City in including a gender-neutral option for birth certificates.
