The state House, with a 65-21 vote, advanced a bill to ban nearly all abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, sending the legislation to the Senate, where according to Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, the bill “hasn’t had a very good reception.” If passed by the Senate, the bill will go before Gov. Bill Lee, who has promised to support any bill reducing the number of abortions throughout the state.
“If this bill passes, the ACLU of Tennessee stands ready to file a lawsuit immediately,” said Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee.
The bill has no exceptions for pregnancies in cases of rape or incest but only in the case of a medical emergency.
