Disney’s Animated Movie ‘Onward’ to Feature First LGBTQ Character

Disney Pixar’s new movie, “Onward,” is breaking ground on March 6 as the studio’s first animated movie to feature an openly LGBTQ character.

The character, voiced by lesbian actress Lena Waithe, is a purple cyclops cop named Officer Specter.

According to Slate, Officer Specter references her girlfriend when she pulls over a driver that was distracted by his girlfriend’s kids. In response, Officer Specter says: “My girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out.”

Officer Specter’s role is minimal and the scene she is in is quick. “It was very casual. And yet, obvious. Both of my kids noticed it,” said Christian blogger Amanda White, a member of the Disney World Mom’s Panel, who attended a pre-release of the movie.

“They say representation matters. And it does,” she said. “Representation brings attention, value and normalcy to a group or idea. So, you need to decide how you feel about the representation.”

“Onward” producer Kori Rae said the scene “just kind of happened,” Yahoo Entertainment reported. “The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted.”

“It’s a modern fantasy world, and we want to represent the modern world,” added director, Dan Scanlon.

“In the past, there were mostly speculations about the inclusion of LGBTQ characters by Disney,” said the American Family Association. “But now Disney has traded its subtlety for intentionality. Disney has decided to be politically correct instead of providing family friendly programming. Disney should stick to entertaining, not pushing an agenda.”

Disney’s not the only one pushing the progressive-left agenda. PBS Kids’ animated show “Clifford the Big Red Dog” has become the second series with an LGBTQ character. The rebooted series now features a child with two lesbian moms. The child, named Samantha, is the new friend of Emily Elizabeth, the main character of the show along with her red dog, Clifford. This move comes after the series “Arthur” began its 22nd season last year with a gay wedding when school teacher Mr. Ratburn married a man.
