‘Conversion Therapy’ Banned in New York

The New York Senate has passed legislation barring mental health professionals from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with patients under 18. The bill, signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, provides “that any sexual orientation change efforts attempted on a patient under 18 years of age by a licensed mental health professional shall be considered unprofessional conduct and shall subject the provider to discipline by the provider’s licensing entity.”

According to The New York Times, “between 2012 and 2018, 14 states and Washington, D.C., passed laws prohibiting ‘conversion therapy’ for minors,” which makes New York the 15th state to ban therapists from trying to treat a minor’s sexual orientation.
