Jakarta’s former governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has been released from prison after serving two years for remarks made during his re-election campaign.
Ahok was jailed in May 2017 after a court convicted him of blasphemy against Islam. Indonesia is home to the world’s largest Muslim population.
Ahok appealed the conviction after a man was found guilty of tampering with a video of Ahok’s speech. But the appeal was rejected.
Ahok doesn’t regret his imprisonment. “If we could go back in time and someone asked which would you choose [Going to prison or winning the election], I would say I choose to be imprisoned at Mako to study for two years, so that I could maintain self-discipline for the rest of my life,” Ahok wrote in a letter.
