Billy Graham Rapid Response Team Chaplains Deploy to UNC Charlotte After Deadly Shooting

Two people were killed and another four injured after a gunman opened fire at the Kennedy Building on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on the school’s last day of classes.

Three of the injured victims were in critical condition, police said at a news conference Tuesday night. The fourth person suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, headquartered just 16.5 miles southwest of the UNC Charlotte campus, had Rapid Response Team (RRT) chaplains responding not long after the university went on lock down.

“This is a tragic incident that has impacted the entire UNCC campus community,” said RRT International Director Jack Munday. “With RRT chaplains present, we are here to offer prayer and God’s hope to all that are devastated by this evil act.”

Franklin Graham posted on Twitter Tuesday night, asking followers to join him in prayer: “Join me in prayer for the families of those who lost loved ones and for those injured in this senseless act at UNC Charlotte.”

Police identified the suspect as Trystan Andrew Terrell, 22, and said he was not someone on their radar. Just before 6 p.m., Terrell reportedly entered a classroom, armed with a pistol, and began shooting.

The police responded quickly and disarmed the suspect, taking him into custody on campus, said Chief Jeff Baker of the UNCC Police and Public Safety Department. As of Wednesday morning, the suspect’s motive has not been revealed.

Terrell has been charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on educational property and discharging a firearm on educational property.

He is due to make his first court appearance on Thursday afternoon.

Paul Rold, Terrell’s grandfather, told the Associated Press that his grandson moved to North Carolina with his father after his mother died two years ago. Rold told the AP, “You’re describing someone foreign to me. This is not in his DNA.”

“This is the worst day in the history of UNC Charlotte,” School Chancellor Philip L. Dubois said Tuesday night.
