Moses asked the Lord, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).
Here are some reminders of how we can live our days wisely as we follow God in 2024.
- Renew. Before we embark on anything new, let’s renew the commitments we already have, like marriage, family and church. The most important work we do is in our homes, loving our spouses and guiding our children in a godly fashion; and then walking in constant repentance and forgiveness with our Christian brothers and sisters. Despite what the world says, we do not have to give up our family and spiritual commitments in order to have success in our careers.
- Start a Bible reading plan. Joshua 1:8 tells us to “keep this Book of the Law always on [our] lips; meditate on it day and night” (NIV). While a reading plan alone can’t make you want to read your Bible every day, it is a tool that the Holy Spirit can use to build a love for God’s Word and to help you read it consistently. Since Sunday is the first day of the week, take 10 or 15 minutes to plan how Scripture reading and prayer are going to be significant parts of your days during the week. Without a plan, these most important things could be pushed aside by urgent pressures.
- Live each day for God’s glory. This is why we are created (Isaiah 43:7) and how we are supposed to live out our faith (1 Corinthians 10:31). When we glorify God, we make Him the priority. We recognize Him for who He really is and respond appropriately—praising Him with our lips, obeying His Word and producing spiritual fruit.
- Be preoccupied with Him. In Psalm 9:1, David says: “I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart.” In your spare moments throughout the day, instead of going to social media or checking the news, simply pause and meditate on God or read a passage of Scripture.
- Be careful with your speech. “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones” Proverbs 16:24.
- Serve God through serving others. Galatians 5:13 tells us to “serve one another humbly in love” (NIV). Visit someone in need and ask how you can help them and how you can pray for them. Do simple acts of service: sometimes it’s giving a smile, a hug or encouraging words.
- Stand with the assurance that your faith is unshakeable. Circumstances will change and opposition will come, but God is your anchor, and He doesn’t fail. Stand strong on His promises and your faith, until it is immoveable. God will never leave you. (1 Corinthians 16:13). ©2023 BGEA
